Building the New Bose Professional: How a Legacy Brand Reinvented Itself for the Future of Pro Audio

Key takeaways

  • Independence allowed Bose Professional to rebuild around the needs of integrators and system designers, with full control over its direction.
  • Standing up a new company requires creating global operations, systems, and functions from the ground up while continuing to serve customers.
  • A renewed leadership team has increased agility, strengthened engineering, and accelerated product development.
  • New offices and Experience Centers worldwide — and a Boston headquarters — bring customers closer to Bose Professional solutions.
  • A customer-first, outside-in culture now guides how products, tools, and experiences are built for the commercial AV market.

When Bose Professional officially became an independent company in 2023, it marked the beginning of a bold new chapter — not just for the brand, but for the professional audio industry at large. With over 50 years of innovation behind it and a renewed focus on the needs of integrators, consultants, and system designers, the company is now rewriting what it means to be purpose-built for the AV market.

This wasn’t just a rebrand or restructuring. It was a full-on transformation — one that involved building core business functions from scratch, scaling new global operations, and reorienting the culture from the inside out.

“We have a 50-year legacy of innovation and global relationships, but we get to act like a startup,” said CEO John Maier. “That’s an incredible opportunity for an established business.”

The carve-out: from division to standalone company

For decades, Bose Professional operated as a division within Bose Corporation — respected and recognized, but only a small percentage of a much larger consumer electronics business. While the team delivered real impact, autonomy was limited.

That changed in 2023.

“When Bose Professional was taken independent, the intellectual property and core teams of engineering, product development, sales, and marketing came along,” said Maier. “But we didn’t get functions like finance, HR, operations, legal and IT. That means we were building a business up from scratch while we were running the business.”

In other words: they had to build the plane while flying it.

Standing up the business — fast

The transformation required a complete operational overhaul. The team built a global distribution network, launched a new ERP system and reseller portal, and established new warehousing — including a major U.S. shift from Arizona to Georgia — all while maintaining daily operations.

New departments in finance, IT, HR, and revenue operations were built specifically for the needs of a B2B pro audio company, rather than a consumer electronics business.

“We’ve embraced a more nimble, collaborative approach — prioritizing speed to market, customer experience, and a renewed focus on the commercial installation market,” said Maier.

New leadership, new culture

To guide the transition, Bose Professional assembled a new executive team, blending longtime Bose talent with fresh leadership drawn from both inside and outside the audio industry. This included Kenn LeGault, who joined as VP of Engineering to help rebuild and expand the company’s R&D capabilities.

“For me, it’s the best of both worlds,” LeGault said. “We’ve got this legacy, this rich history, but we also have the opportunity to transform and act with startup agility. I’ve been able to reshape parts of the engineering team and bring in new talent. It’s been super exciting.”

Global growth and experience at scale

The company’s footprint has also grown. In 2024 alone, Bose Professional opened 12 new offices and Experience Centers in cities such as Singapore, Shanghai, Tokyo, Dubai, London, and Amsterdam. In early 2025, they cut the ribbon on their new global headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts — a facility with dedicated demo rooms, training spaces, and engineering labs.

“These centers make it easier for our customers — consultants, integrators, and system operators — to see and hear our solutions,” said Maier. “We’re investing in spaces that make those real-world connections possible.”

Rebuilding the product pipeline

Internally, Bose Professional restructured its product development process to be faster, more collaborative, and more customer driven. One of the biggest changes? Bringing formerly outsourced software development in-house.

“We’re placing some longer-term bets that will pay off in the coming years,” said LeGault. “And because we’ve streamlined the team, we can develop and iterate much faster.”

This has led to a wave of over 40 new products released since the company became independent in 2023.

“We’re not just releasing new products — we’re making the process easier,” said Shawn Watts, Director of Product Management. “From commissioning to end-user training, we’re eliminating the pain points for customers.”

A cultural reset: customer-first and outside-in

Perhaps the biggest transformation is cultural. As a standalone company, Bose Professional no longer splits its attention between consumer markets and commercial AV. Now, the team is fully focused on its core — consultants, integrators, and the real-world challenges they face.

“Instead of being 4% of a big consumer business, we’re 100% of a pro audio company,” said Maier. “That clarity makes a huge difference.”

To maintain that focus, the company has launched customer councils, revamped its internal feedback loops, and prioritized outreach to integrators around the globe.

“We’re shifting from an inside-out approach to an outside-in one,” said Watts. “That means spending more time understanding how integrators actually work — and designing solutions that fit their reality.”

Looking ahead

Today, Bose Professional controls its own destiny. From product development and pricing to go-to-market strategy, the company now operates with complete autonomy.

“We move faster. We’re more focused. And we’re closer to the people who use our systems every day,” said Maier.

Now two years into its independence, Bose Professional is entering a new phase of momentum — one where its deep engineering roots, global reach, and customer-first mindset are aligned more tightly than ever.

“We’ve got the foundation, we’ve got the team, and we’ve got the focus,” Maier concluded. “Now we’re building the future.”

And for the consultants, integrators, and partners who rely on Bose Professional, that future is already starting to sound a whole lot better.
