CASE STUDY – SPORTS & FITNESS | SHANGHAI STADIUM

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Shanghai Stadium was originally built to host football matches during the 2008 Summer Olympics, and it has recently been redesigned according to strict FIFA World Cup requirements and has been the home of Shanghai Shenhua since 2023.

When it came time to re-designing the sound reinforcement system, the demanding requirements of modern football contests meant the system would need to be powerful and flexible enough to deliver the necessary sound pressure levels, while providing even coverage, balanced timbre, and vocal clarity.

THE BOSE PROFESSIONAL SOLUTION

Right from the start, the size and unusual shape of the stadium presented specific challenges. The roof is wavy and saddle-shaped, creating an undulating rising and falling effect, and features a 10,000-m2 wrap-around screen canopy at the top of the venue. While this modern appearance is visually striking and a signature feature of the stadium, the shapes and surfaces create acoustic reflections, dampen clarity and create specific challenges that would need to be solved through a rigorous system design process.

Due to the nature of the original stadium’s super structure, the positions and weights of the speaker arrays had all been pre-defined. Because of this, the speakers would need to be installed at different heights, ranging from 30+ to 60+ meters over the crowd, providing yet another layer of challenges to solve when it comes to presenting an even sound field across such a large area.

Field Level of Shanghai Stadium

In order to design a system that would deliver consistent, clear, powerful sound while adhering to these strict design specifications and requirements, the Bose Professional Modeler simulation software was used to trial different loudspeaker configurations and placements to achieve optimal coverage, SPL, and intelligibility.

After careful analysis and virtual acoustic modeling tests, ArenaMatch DeltaQ Array loudspeakers were ultimately selected for the sound reinforcement system in Shanghai Stadium. A total of 32 separate ArenaMatch line arrays were used in the stadium, with 16 arrays in the seating area and 16 additional arrays in the competition area, all powered by 60 PowerMatch 8500N amplifiers and controlled by three ControlSpace EX1280C processors connected via redundant Dante systems.

ArenaMatch DeltaQ modules make it easy to create outdoor loudspeaker arrays that bring consistent, intelligible sound to every listener with different models designed to deliver specific horizontal and vertical coverage. These varying models can be combined to form arrays that deliver customized coverage and throw. ArenaMatch also offers the flexibility to customize the length of each array according to the weighting limitations, effectively avoiding interference with the audience’s sight from long line arrays.

With the re-design completed and the new system installed, Shanghai Stadium now meets FIFA’s strict World Cup requirements and is one of the stadiums with the highest construction standards in the country.
