Ostehuset opened in November 2018 in Norske Bank’s previous bank office on the historic Domkirkeplassen in the center of Stavanger. Given the historical character of the building, key challenges for the audio solution included identifying products that could work within very restricted construction parameters; specifically, loudspeakers that would not interfere with the overall interior design elements or sacrifice sound quality needed to be implemented. The building contains many hard surfaces, with two concrete walls and an entry mostly made of glass, which made this an interesting project. The wood panel ceilings also needed to remain intact, as did all the other wooden parts of the interior. The customer wanted high-quality, flexible audio for a multipurpose space serving as both a quiet lunch restaurant and a bar at night. Designs created with the Bose Professional Modeler software provided several options regarding how and where speakers could be mounted, simulating where sound would be projected and how it would behave. The client also needed to have the audio set up into zones that could be easily managed by the staff.
Since most of the interior is architecturally protected and cannot be altered or damaged in any way, the mounting of the loudspeakers was very important. Ostehuset selected Bose Professional partner Showroom to design the best solution for this unique and historical Norwegian location. All subwoofers and RMU208 loudspeakers were mounted to the concrete substructure above the wooden panels and ceiling, with the RMU208 units suspended by wire between the wooden slats and placed so they do not stand out in the large space or compete with the interior design. For the restaurant, bar and wine bar areas, cutouts for previous ceiling lamps were the perfect size to install Bose Professional EdgeMax90 and EdgeMax180 loudspeakers. In common areas, conference rooms and the basement, where the special beer and wine tasting room are located, the DS40 and DS16 speakers provide a balance of function and design. All the different rooms and audio zones are controlled digitally via Dante and ControlSpace, making audio steering as easy as possible for staff to manage.
“The whole audio system is very well designed for our specific needs and really enhances the character of the building. It worked perfectly to reuse the holes from where the previous ceiling lamps had been to mount new loudspeakers in, for example. The sound quality, overall, is amazing, and we are very pleased with the fact that we easily can control the volume in the different zones for whatever purpose we require that day without interfering with the rest of the ongoing business.”
