FAQs

+ What is the MA12 modular line array loudspeaker?

The MA12 modular line array loudspeaker is designed for acoustically demanding indoor spaces where speech intelligibility is critical and speech reproduction is the main requirement. To deliver full-range music performance, bass augmentation is required. Twelve 2.25-inch (57 mm) drivers mounted in a vertical line array deliver 145° of wide dispersion and narrow vertical pattern control, significantly reducing ceiling and floor reflections. The MA12 loudspeaker delivers 300 watts (continuous) of power handling and can be mounted in single or multiple loudspeaker configurations. It is well suited for indoor applications such as houses of worship, auditoriums, transportation hubs, atriums, malls, gymnasiums and multipurpose spaces.

+ Why is it called the MA12?

“MA” refers to modular array; “12” refers to the number of drivers included.

+ How does the MA12 modular line array loudspeaker fit in the product family?

The MA12 is the first loudspeaker within the family of modular line array loudspeakers for engineered sound. It is designed to offer the unique benefits of line arrays for installed and portable systems.

+ What does the MA12 modular line array loudspeaker add to the Bose Professional Systems product line?

Due to its line array behavior when using multiple loudspeakers, it is mounted at ear height and, therefore, better solves customer problems at a lower overall project cost than conventional systems.

+ What are the main applications for the MA12 modular line array loudspeaker?

The MA12 loudspeaker delivers quality sound for voice reproduction. When it is paired with the MB4 bass loudspeaker, the result is a powerful full-range system that can solve many customer challenges. For rooms with high reverb times, the MA12 performs exceptionally well. It is well suited for such indoor applications as houses of worship, auditoriums, transportation hubs, atriums, malls, gymnasiums and multipurpose spaces.

+ What are the main differences between the MA12 modular line array loudspeaker and the MA12EX modular line array loudspeaker?

The MA12 loudspeaker is designed for acoustically demanding indoor spaces where speech intelligibility is critical and speech reproduction is the main requirement. Bass augmentation is required to achieve full-range music performance. It is made up of twelve 2.25-inch (57 mm) drivers mounted in a vertical line array, delivering 145° of horizontal dispersion and 300 watts (continuous) of power handling. The MA12EX loudspeaker is a new weather-resistant loudspeaker in the MA12 family. Designed for a wide variety of indoor and outdoor spaces where voice and full-range music are desired, this loudspeaker delivers full-range music performance between 75 Hz to 13 kHz (±3 dB) without the need for additional bass augmentation. It is made up of twelve 2.25-inch (57 mm) drivers mounted in an Articulated Array design, delivering 160° of horizontal coverage and 150 watts (continuous) of power handling.

+ What is the main difference between the MA12 modular line array loudspeaker and other loudspeakers?

The MA12 loudspeaker offers a wide dispersion pattern with a flat vertical profile. It should be mounted at ear height to place the listener’s ears within this “wedge of sound.” This loudspeaker is ideal for applications that present floor and ceiling reverberation challenges. Its longer throw and gradual roll-off offer a more even SPL throughout the venue. It is simple and convenient to install and service.

+ What is distinctive about the MA12 modular line array loudspeaker?

It uses 12 small drivers (2.25 in, 57 mm) that offer 155 Hz to 12 kHz (±3 dB). The drivers are densely packed, resulting in high power handling (300 W) and true line array acoustic performance when multiple loudspeakers are stacked.

+ What are the rules for using multiple MA12 modular line array loudspeakers?

The bottom of the array has to be at or below chest height of a person sitting in the first row, and the top of the array has to be higher than the head of a person standing in the last row. All the listeners’ ears must be contained in the “wedge of sound.” A slight pitch from 1° – 10° may be applied to the loudspeaker to eliminate reflections off the rear wall, as long as the listeners’ ear heights are still covered within the line array.

+ Must the MA12 modular line array loudspeaker always be used vertically, or can I mount it horizontally?

The loudspeaker must be used vertically. Horizontal installation will reflect sound on the floor and ceiling, compromising clarity and intelligibility, and providing only a narrow band of sound horizontally.

+ Is the MA12 modular line array loudspeaker passively or actively equalized?

The MA12 requires active equalization, which ensures balanced low, mid and high frequencies in the loudspeaker. In addition, it provides high- and low-band pass filtering for speaker protection.

+ Why do I need the SP-24, ESP-880 or ESP-00 series II engineered sound processors, or another suitable digital signal processor?

The MA12—like most other loudspeakers in the product family—requires active equalization to provide a balanced frequency response, and to protect the loudspeaker while also delivering smooth, accurate spectral response across the entire operating range.

+ What settings relevant to the MA12 modular line array loudspeaker are preset in the SP-24, and in the ControlSpace ESP-880 and ESP-00 Series II engineered sound processors?

All MA12 presets are available in ControlSpace engineered sound processors.
